A garage door rough opening should always be in relation to the size of the garage door you are installing. If you cannot make it the exact same size as the door, a contractor will usually advise that you will make it marginally smaller than the door itself. You may need to revise the overall width of the rough opening if you’re considering marble, brick materials or other stones to add to the design of the garage door. Remember: You don’t have to go through the challenging process of making an accurate measurement on your own. Not only will the vendor that provided your garage door be willing to support you and provide advice, but they might be able to give you guidance during the installation process, giving you the number of someone who would be available to help.

When deciding what you would like to place underneath the header of your garage door, be very careful on the decorations you choose as it can affect the overall stability of the unit as time goes on. Remember that in most cases, the height of your rough opening should be identical to that of your garage door. Getting the correctly-sized rough opening protects the contents of your garage from the elements, preventing any rain, wind or wintry showers from getting inside. Indeed, if you’re looking to adapt your garage into a den for watching the football, this will ensure that it isn’t too cold and harsh inside.

The best way to receive desired results when sizing up your rough opening is to plan in advance and make sure that you have all of the materials you could possibly need. There’s nothing worse than getting to the final stages of your project only to realise that you are missing a vital tool!

The average size of single garage door is 7-feet tall and 9-feet wide. You can also make it to 8-feet tall and 20-feet wide. You can further modify it depending on the space behind the door.
