Try tightening the packing nut behind the handle. If leaking persists, then you can either buy replacement parts or use the parts from a new hose bib. The new packing ring (30560) will be required if leaking is a persistent occurrence, and this can be bought from www.woodfordmfg.com.

Firstly, drain the water and loosen the packing nut behind the handle. Once you have done this, turn the handle counter-clockwise and pull, which will remove the entire handle. Please note that this may require some physical force. To replace with new, place the handle back and turn anti-clockwise. Tighten the packing nut behind the handle, and test to see if working.

However, you may find problems when performing this, as you may find that holding the float in place whilst screwing in the retaining nut is difficult. To solve this problem, do the following.

Firstly, fill a jug with half a gallon of hot water. Then, make sure a toothpick and a jar of honey is at hand. Ensure that  the honey is soft enough to roll on the toothpick , or this will not work. If you find it isn’t, simply heat the honey, perhaps using a microwave.

After dipping the toothpick into the honey, insert the toothpick into the shaft hole of the retaining nut.

The purpose of the honey is to hold the shaft in place, whilst screwing in the retaining nut. Therefore, make sure there is enough honey available on the toothpick for this to happen. Screw the retaining nut in fairly tight. In order to get rid of the remaining honey, carefully pour the hot water over the retaining nut. Finally, place the cover on.

Both of my Woodford Model 17 faucets leak out the top cap when the faucet is on and the hose connected. A bucket placed under the faucet fills rather quickly when it is turned on.
Plumber says "they all do that", "live with it". I cannot except that, please advise.

The model 17 is anti freeze and the air chamber valve has failed. Get a repair kit that has only part 10 which is three parts, look it up on the net, Pry the cap off, loosen and remove the threaded value, pick out the float wit needle nose and then reverse the process. Without seeing your setup this is a 90% sure diagnosis and the repair is 100%. Tell the plumber he is missing a lot of revenue as this should be a $70.00 job. Knowledge not time.

Get a repair kit for the faucet. Cut off water. Pry the top cap off with a screw driver or so> unscrew the plastic like holder and put aside temporarily. Take the float out and put with cap. Now take the new materials and take out the cap, the replacement float and the holder for the float that you removed and install them in the reverse order you removed them.
Turn the water back on. If yours is like mine it will leak from the cap only. This leak went away in about one day .

You can purchase either a new hosebib and use the parts or get replacement parts. It is very easy to repair. Shut off and drain down the water. Loosen the packing nut behind the handle. Turn the handle counter-clockwise and remove the entire handle and stem by pulling out. Reverse the process for replacement.

Hi,  The most important piece of information has been left out of the other answers!  After prying open the old anti-freeze cap and unscrewing the retaining nut and the float and attempting to reverse the process when installing the new float and retaining nut, you will find that the float is nearly impossible to hold in place while you are screwing in the retaining nut (as gravity will make it fall out).  It will keep slipping out of the shaft making it impossible to install correctly!  HERE'S THE FIX:  Go into your kitchen and fill a qt. Or 1/2 gallon jug full of very hot water.  Next, pull the jar of honey from the cabinet and a toothpick out of the other cabinet.  Dip the toothpick into the honey (you might have to microwave the honey if it has solidified) and insert the toothpick into the shaft hole of the retaining nut, leaving enough honey in the shaft to "hold" the float in place while you screw in the retaining nut.  Once it is screwed in properly, slowly pour the very hot water over the retaining nut.  This will remove any on the honey that is on the float shaft and the retaining nut shaft hole.  Then pop on the cover and you are done!

There is a packing behind the the packing nut it will either be rubber, or it could be white or brown depending on the age of the faucet.  Just take a small screw driver and remove the packing, and the rod assembly will come out.
