There are a few complementary colors which would be perfect to go with Honey Oak cabinets.  A neutral subdued color such as eggplant yellow, cream or white compliments oak very well due to the fact that the oak wood in the cabinets has a yellowish color to it.

Choosing colors for home interiors can be confusing as well as frustrating.  There are so many different colors to choose from and it can be hard to actually pick the correct one to suit one’s needs.

Many homeowners choose to go with the safest option which is usually white or cream, however it is important to remember, that if a wrong color is chosen then it can always be painted over with a different one.

A couple of ways to help you decide which color is right for cabinets which are honey oak is firstly to use paint sample cards. These cards are very useful and most if not all DIY stores supply them, usually for free.  They show a range of colors from light to dark so that you can choose which colors go well together more easily.

Another way is to try before you buy, where most stores will give you a small sample pot of paint so that you can go home and test it out on your walls, this way you do not need to buy a whole pot of paint to then find out it is wrong and you have wasted your money.

A complementary color is a pair of colors which are of opposite hue in some color model.  In color theory complementary colors are if when two colors are mixed together they produce a neutral color, for example grey, white or black.

Another way of finding a complementary color is if you focus on a certain color for between thirty seconds to one minute, then look at a white surface then the complementary color will appear.  For example, if you stare at red then cyan will appear then this will be red’s complementary color.

I have used a creamy buttery yellow in my kitchen with oak cabinets on the walls (get a paint chip to compare first, of course)  then to add a splash of color in accessories try red or a cobalt blue- looks real nice with that pop of color-  do not match the walls to the cabinets- it will look too bland  and boring--

have fun--- I love to decorate

Montgomery white by BM paints Pottery Barn line. It's a buttery yellow color that we painted in our kitchen and it really made the cabinets look nice. We also have dark forrest green countertops and the color compliments those as well.

I would suggest any sort of a neutral color, for example a medium green of some sort or a very timid yellow, nothing bright. Or you could have accent walls, where you have the green on three walls and a tan on the other. I always get my inspirations from magazines or home design shows, you can buy the same things but so much cheaper.

You do not mention the flooring, or counter tops nor draperies/blinds... I would suggest a deep forest green to make the honey color really jump out.  This is what I have in my kitchen with tumbled marble green counter tops.  Good Luck!!!

I would suggest to go with cream color, or pale white or you can also try the color of your flooring. In your case, it is blue, so you can go with it.  You can also try contrast color with oak cabinets!

As an interior designer, I see a lot of Oak cabinets and my goal is to make them look fresh and updated. Sometimes it's as simple as choosing the right color for the walls. If you have Oak or Honey-toned wood cabinets and want to refresh your kitchen, consider painting the walls in today's neutrals, such as soft blue-grays, greens and neutral beiges.

Another option is also available instead of painting your wall I would love to see you paint those cabinets. A pretty taupe or light grey would look amazing. It would update the whole look of the kitchen.

I would use Stainless steel appliances which has a timeless and high end look, or black appliances that provide a color contrast to the cabinets.

If it were me, I would base the color of the appliances on the color of the kitchen wall, not the cabinets. Also, do you want a contrasting color pattern or a similar light color like the honey oak cabinets? It's your kitchen. Get swatches of colors available for the cabinets and choose your favorite.
