Dear Melinda,
Coach Dave here and I work for The Home Depot.

To find the dimensions of an area we usually multiply length times width. If you were to divide 9 feet times 5 feet, we would get 45 sq feet.

As for the 36 ft of fencing, This would not be included in the area of the garden. As for perimeter, there is only 28 feet of fencing needed.

If we subtract the 28 feet of the garden this from 36 feet of fencing, you have 8 feet left over.

I hope this clarifies the dimensions of your garden.
Coach Dave
