Do I need a pillow top mattress? My friend has one and she recommended me to buy one as well. But I'm not sure about this even though her mattress is nice. I have a backache, maybe it would help me, but I'm not sure if I need it.

I have a pillow top and an often aching back and I find the combination of a firm mattress with a soft top very comfortable.

For someone with back trouble, a nice firm mattress is wonderful. A softer mattress tends to let the spine sag and put your back muscles in a bind. So your friend is correct in a way, you can get a pillowtop mattress as Kong as the mattress itself is firm.

It's a personal choice.

I've had a sleep number mattress for over 25 years (around the time they first came out.)

I like the 100 number, my wife likes about  a 70 number.  She prefers a thick mattress pad, I prefer the thin ones.

Before spending hundreds of dollars on a new mattress, a less expensive route to take would be to buy a topper for your mattress to see if that will help your back problems. There are different types of toppers that will range in price from $50 to $500, depending on what you're looking for. Back in the day, I went to Wal*Mart and picked up a topper for $50 and it works just fine for my back needs. Good luck.
