A woodworm is not a certain species of insects; they are just certain types of beetles that bore into wood in their larva stages. When wood worms affect your furniture, they make tiny pin like holes which grow in diameter as they grow deeper and deeper. This characteristic of the holes are due to the increasing size of the worm.

You will notice fine particles of dust coming out of the ends of the holes. To find out if the woodworm is new or old you will have to notice just a couple of things. Firstly, see how deep the holes are and if you notice that they are really deep, then your worm problem is pretty old. If you notice eggs at the end of the holes that too will mean that your wood worms are old.
