Check how much shade. Very few sites are in total shade all day but if yours is one of these then ivy is one of few climbing plants which are really capable of flourishing in really shady conditions. Fortunately ivy comes in many varieties and some of the variegated types are very bright. They are known as silvers and yellows and they can brighten up a gloomy spot. Avoid dark leaved ivy varieties which san make the space seem even gloomier. The Virginia creeper is another although this is a bit dull until it performs its trick of turning bright scarlet in Autumn. Partial shade is less challenging. The climbing hydrangea is a self-supporting plant that needs no trellis but must be trained and contained. It is slow to start bit vigorous when established. Its glossy dark leaves are attractive and the creamy, almost blowsy flower heads a real treat in early summer. Some clematis enjoy shade and all enjoy having their roots and lower stems shaded so work out the light levels as you progress up the wall.
