When General, (not Difficult) Repairs Are Needed In Your Home, What Do You Do?

I'd prefer to fix it myself before hiring someone that charges way to much that I could do myself. I also have friends that will do the job really really cheap if I really really need them otherwise, I paint, put up all my own wall border, install my own faucets and my boyfriend has installed some light fixtures and ceiling fans.

I do too, which is what prompted my question. I think it's good to know how to do these things yourself -- I get a sense of pride in the work, when I learn how to do something I used to have to call someone else in to do!

Most of the time I prefer to do these things myself. Some jobs I just really like (painting, wall papering, spackling) and I like the satisfaction of being able to do it myself or to learn somethings new. When I face a job that I haven't done before, and feel like I could really mess it (or myself!) up if I made a mistake (like burn the house down, flood my house, or electrocute myself-- LOL!), then I call someone to help walk me through it, and I pay them, but watch to learn, and ask a lot of questions about it, hoping I can do it myself next time. Also, when a job needs major tools I don't have, I usually just call a contractor, though I don't like paying someone for something I can do myself, given the right tools.

That's so true! Many times when I'm unsure of how to do something (I recently put in a new circuit in the electrical panel box), I'll go online and print out the specific instructions, with illustrations, to follow. Plumbing is one of the things I don't usually push my luck with, though! I'm currently in the process of repairing and sealing cinder block basement walls -- time consuming, but the local companies wanted over $2000 to do the job, and it's really not all that difficult.

I usually do it myself. I'm a tightwad ;) lol! Besides, I hate having to wait for a professional to show up.

I completely agree with you! I've learned more about how to fix and re-do home related problems ---- and saving money in the bargain, by doing the repairs myself. Half the time the service people here never show up anyway.

That has to be wonderful, having people you can trust and who know their stuff, right in the family!
