This is a reference to the Ghandi-inspired movement known as Chipko Andolan. Its mantra was non-violent or peaceful protest that became widely known as "tree hugging' because of the technique used by protestors to hamper and raise awareness about the issue of deforestation.
Protesters resorted to hugging trees to prevent them from being cut down. This movement can be traced back to the 1970s.
