My father and grandfather always dusted themselves before going out to the fields with sulfur flower (or flour of Sulfur?) paying special attention to socks, boots, and waist bands/belts. This always kept the ticks and back when I was a kid the biggest concern chiggers off, when I remember to use it before I work in my yard or wood lot I very rarely have any bites or ticks on me. There are old recipes for sulfur dosing of your self and animals, most insects dislike and avoid sulfur. Here is a link to Mother Earth News with a recipe and a caution for use of sulfur as a medicine/dose;
www.motherearthnews.com have not gone that far yet thou this year is staring out bad I may have to try that, or lots of food with garlic.
Hope this helps
