If the wood is to remain unfinished then for general cleaning I would dust it off with a damp cloth,then use milk or other wood polish on it.if the wood has stubborn stains on it you may have to resort to sanding it down to get the stain out,if so then I would stain it or put on a coat of varnish to protect it from future damage.
