If the thermal fogging is performed by a qualified person the odor is completely eradicated. I have been in the apartment maintenance industry for 25 years. I can tell you that when aI thermal fog is used it encapsulates the smell and over a period of 5 to 10 days completely neutralizes the odor. I have also used it for cigarette smoke and it never comes back.

Technically speaking, thermal fogging is a masking agent. It is typically a petroleum based product that is heated to a high temperature until causing to become gaseous. Once a thermal fogging has been performed I always recommend that the dwelling be vacated for at least 48 hours. Since it is petroleum based it will damage leather and natural rubbers that are exposed. The fog itself is also flammable to some extent. It is also extremely harmful to your health, proper protective equipment should be utilized when applying these agents. While it is only a masking agent, it is probably the most effective odor control masking agent. The only way to literally eradicate an odor is to remove the source followed by an ozone treatment.

It will rid house of smoke odor, but will add odor of product used to fog! Just had this done. BEWARE - they say you need to be away for 4 hours - more like 2 days in our case. Very intense talcum smell. We came home in 4 hours and were unable to stay in the house - could actually "taste" the fog, and the smell lingered on our clothes for 2 days. ASK about health issues.
