It's highly likely that there is nothing wrong at all. Many appliances heat up upon use due to the electrical currents running through the cord. If you really believe it's hotter than normal then there could be a short circuit in the cord or the outlet. An older vacuum may need to be replaced.

You can have the cord replaced on your vacuum instead of throwing it in the trash abd buying a new vacuum. Replacing the cord is cheaper. Abd it keeps another vacuum out of the landfill.
