Why do biologists stain specimens? The reason for staining specimens is to see certain organelles within a eukaryotic cell. These structures as well as the cell itself are normally translucent. Therefore the stain provides a clearer picture of the specimen. With prokaryotic cells, staining helps identify the type of bacteria. Staining also allows biologists to see parts of the cell that would normally be unidentifiable a biologist.
