In the very early stages of growth, cucumbers will grow on the vine either along the ground or trained onto a trellis. The vines will stick to the ground and the cucumbers will grow on the plant in a similar way to how bananas grow. Prior to the actual cucumbers starting to grow, the plants themselves can be identified by their large, flat and spread out leaves. The plants also have distinctive small yellow flowers that come into bloom before the plant’s fruit (more commonly known as cucumbers) begin to grow.
Once the fruit does begin to show, make sure you give the plants a little boost by feeding them some additional fertilizer. There are many different varieties of cucumber that can be grown but you will know when they are ready when they are a few inches long. It does depend on the variety you are growing.
They can then be removed by cutting them off at the vine. Usually, most cucumbers that are grown outdoors will be harvested by the middle of September, although other indoor or greenhouse grown cucumbers may be grown until October. Of course, when you harvest them will obviously depend on the type of weather you are having and what effect that is having on your produce.
