A Goiter is a condition when the front of the neck swells up due to enlarged thyroid gland. This condition occurs due to deficiency of iodine in the diet. It is fairly common in women. Treatment is done to regulate the amount of thyroxin produced and this will take care of the swelling. Addition of iodine in the diet also helps. Operating and removing a part of the gland is also an option.

My goiter was caused by a form of hypothyroidism, and do to the size of it , it was removed by a surgeon. Goiters can be caused by different things, and should always be watched. Mine was causing difficulty swallowing ,now I take synthroid medication, but I have noticed different reactions to different things since I had it removed. My allergies are 100 times worse, I started having severe asthma attacks, feeling run down, and a lot more things, too many to list. So be sure before you opt to remove. If it starts to become life threatening get it removed. good luck, Lori
