An equilibrium ball valve has a hole through the middle that is shaped like the letter T of the English alphabet. It is a three-way ball valve. In case of three-way ball valves, the flow can either be directed towards one of the two sides or both the sides or even shut off completely.

Equilibrium ball valves open by the turn of a handle attached to a ball. The ball, which is inside the valve, has a hole or port through its middle. The flow will occur only when the port is in line with both the ends of the valve.

When the equilibrium ball valve is closed, the hole is perpendicular to both ends of the valve. The flow is then blocked. The position of the handle of an equilibrium ball valve indicates the status of the valve. Equilibrium ball valves are known for their durability and are in perfect working condition even years after they have become defunct.
