The way to overcome this is to pour more into the mould than is necessary, letting the underneath layer harden slightly first, so it doesn't spill out, then very slowly pour some more in.
Then trim it off with a sharp knife when it is completely dry
and hard when you trim the wick.
In fact this method can make very attractive candles, if you have different coloured waxes. Its best to limit the colours to three. You can make very shallow bands of different colours, waiting till each band is more solid before pouring on the next layer. Alternatively you can take colours that graduate in shade from dark to light, starting with the darkest and pouring a lighter shade of wax, and then when that band is dry, you can pour the final and lightest coloured one.
This way you can make a candle in the shades of the desert sands, which are very chic in a tonal room.
