- Buy some sticky traps such as the fly traps that are available to buy in many hardware stores. In order for these to be effective however, you will need to set some kind of bait to make the bull gnats attracted to the traps.
- A lot of people have said using vanilla essence can repel them. Simply type 'blackfly vanilla' into an Internet search engine and you will be able to see a number of postings for homemade vanilla repellents. Vanilla oil can also be bought in mist spray which can be sprayed onto fabrics and then hung on trees or bushes near where the gnats are found.
- Some people have found using garlic can also be a great repellent. By crushing some garlic into a cloth or piece of fabric and then hanging this around the affected area, the gnats are reportedly said to be repelled by the smell.
- If none of the above mentioned methods have worked for you, try to wear some insect repellent to protect yourself from being bitten.
