Can dog fleas harm you in any way?
Dog and cat fleas do not live on people, but they can bite them, leaving a very itchy spot. However, they are irritating rather than dangerous. Only human lice can pass disease between people. The worst case happened in Russia between 1918 and 1922 when 3 million people died after catching a disease spread by lice.
Human body lice live in clothes and lay their eggs in the folds of material. They can survive for 10 days without their human host. Each female can lay between 200 and 300 eggs. The lice hatch and move onto the skin only to feed.
Human head lice have no wings and they cannot fly. They jump from head to head and then cling to their hosts using the well-developed claws on the ends of their legs. Head lice are difficult to see but their bites cause intense itching.
A flea can leap incredible distances. A dog flea can jump 30 centimetres. This is the same as a 6 foot tall man jumping 90 metres in the long jump.
