If your switch plates are plastic, recommend you take them off and spray them with a can of Plasti-cote paint. It comes in many different colors and sticks very well to plastic without having to go through the hassle of sanding or priming the plates.

Or if you want shiny I would recommend an enamel paint. Whatever you use make sure it's durable as light switches generally get more contact than most painted surfaces. I would also recommend taking the plate off and painting it, this way you can get into all the sides of the switch easily. You may also want to look into the option of getting a fascia for it. There are a range of fascia's out there for mast standard switch plates that just screw over the top of them. The are pretty cheep and generally last a good bit longer than a paint job.

Sure can but rough the plate up a bit using some fine sandpaper so the paint will stick but use a latex semi gloss so it wont be too shiny
