Yes , you can put furniture in front of a window,  I have it there.

Be careful though! Depending on the sunlight exposure
May cause some fading....

I've never heard of such a rule unless its a feng suy (sp) thing--most don't want to block the light--(if you like my answer please remember to rate it)
