If the sap is clear this is probably a response to some sort of damage done to the area around the sap. If the sap is milky in nature then it is probably a bacterial canker and that is not pretty. In later stages of bacterial canker your leaves will probably turn yellow and you will see brown patches on the edges of the leaves. Please google bacterial canker for more info...
