Using a normal sized garden hose, it took me around 30 to 45 minutes. Much longer than I expected. If you are draining to get rid of sediment, you may and to place a bunch of white paper towels at the end of the hose to "see" what type of stuff comes out of the hot water tank. The paper towel will allow the water to pass through but catch the sediment coming out leaving it on top of the paper towel to view. The kids love seeing the "junk" come out.
We have a Bradford White 50 gallon water heater and it was done working at 6.5 years. We could not get it to drain after doing all the steps that you find in the manual because it was so clogged with sediment . We needed to take a pretty sturdy, but flexible ziptie and stuck it in the drain valve and reamed it to finally loosen blueish green sediment. It worked like a charm. We could not believe how clogged it was. Then it took approx. 30-45 min to drain.
About the same amount of time as it took to fill it.
