The wisteria is a type of flowering plant that is part of the pea family. It is a climbing vine that can grow quickly and is native to the eastern United States as well as countries such as China, Korea, and Japan. They climb by twisting their stems clockwise or counter-clockwise around any support they can cling onto. They have been known to climb as high as twenty meters off the ground and can spread out to a width of ten meters. If you have one of these plants too close to your home, they may indeed cause damage to the foundation of your house if you have a smaller house with a weak foundation, so be wary of letting any grow too close to your home. Newer homes with strong foundations are for the most part safe from damage from this fast-growing flowering vine.

The wisteria is a very hardy and fast growing plant, so it can get out of hand very quickly if not closely monitored. It can grow in poor soil as well as fertile, moist, and well drained areas and is considered an invasive plant species in many places. When wisteria does not have something to cling to and grow they will most likely grow into a clump. If you want the plant to grow vertically, you need the support for it to be very strong since wisteria can become heavy as it grows to maturity.

Wisteria is the vast majority of cases is no threat to the foundation of your home. They can grow quickly and provide coverage when prompted and can be an attractive flowering vine that helps to showcase your home in the best possible light. Simply give them a post or tree as an anchor, and they will quickly grow and attached themselves to it with very little prompting.

They can, over a long period of time, best to cut them back before they get to foundation, they are very invasive, for all their beauty, and are a very tough plant to get rid of.
