• The Maytag washing machine company
Maytag was founded by the renowned businessman Frederick Maytag in 1893. The company was originally christened the Maytag Washing Machine Company, although this long-winded name was later changed to simply Maytag. The company thrived over its first few decades, and although it was hit quite badly by the Great Depression of the 1930s, it was one of the few companies to continue to make a profit. In the North American market, Maytag is a popular name and a leading provider of household appliances. As well as washing machines, Maytag manufactures a number of other products, including dishwashers, cookers and refrigerators. It also offers smaller appliances such as irons and kettles.
• The rise of the household appliance
Household appliances such as washing machines became popular in the early 1900s, when housewives sought to make their lives easier and technology gave them the means to do so. At first, it seemed the new appliances were more troublesome than helpful, as people had to adopt new methods and deal with machinery constantly breaking down. But after an initial period of doubt, the washing machine became incredibly popular; nowadays, almost every household makes regular use of one. Of course, technical problems are still common, which is why usage manuals are vitally important. Be sure to keep your appliance manuals in a safe place in case you need to refer to one in the future.
