What type of laundry detergent do you use? Is there really any difference between brands other than scent?

My wife just started using the Arm and Hammer detergent pods as opposed to Gain, which didn't work all that well for us. Arm and Hammer seems to do the trick. Yeah, she doesn't trust me with the laundry.

I used to use the more well know brands---Tide, Cheer, etc. Until my wife once told me to pick up the cheapest brand one time I went shopping.

Surprisingly, I didn't notice any difference when we used it.

Turns out that probably 90% of detergent ingredients are surfactants. The rest are essentially compounds that handle grease (which water alone can't do) and "softeners" and fragrances.

Bottom line for me:  Try the cheaper brands.  I'm sure some are better at handling certain types of "grime." Some might cause skin irritation also, but a little experimentation may actually save you a decent amount of money.

I usually use All for sensitive skin as some of the other brands really bother me. Don't know why but some really make me itch !

I buy the giant tubs of powered Sun laundry detergent because the plastic containers are useful and the detergent is just fine, no different from other powered or liquid detergents... Plus it's cheap.

I've always used Purex. If I have a stain on something, I pour it directly on the stain and voila! No more stain. It also has worked on stains that I didn't notice until I've washed and dried the garment. Pored it directly on it - ran it through again. All clean.
