I had this problem, but it had nothing to do with HE detergent. I simply had an old, rusty object stuck in my washer. In my front-loading washer, things like this culprit, a paper clip, get trapped in the rubber at the bottom of the door opening all the time; I just didn't notice. In searching for the answer to my problem of brown spots, I also ran across people who say they had nails and coins trapped there. Finally, some folks said that for them the spots were a result of rusty hot water heaters or rust and/or red clay in their water pipes. Thankfully for me, a paper clip was easier to remove than an entire water heater or pipe system!

Glad to hear other people have had this problem and of course the idea that it could be a rusting paper clip is quite a possibility and I need to check it out.  It seems only to affect old white cotton things as all my newer and/or coloured and/or non cotton items have been ok.  Weird.  The streaks can be more or less scrubbed out with a brush but it took a good deal of scrubbing.  I don't want to be doing that after every light wash!!

Well I once had the same problem. But that was caused due to the old machine and some rust formed inside its body. That rust came out through the inside of the washer and stained all the clothes. However that does not apply here as you washer is new. Get it checked by someone, there might be some kind of problem with it.

I have been experiencing the same thing, espically my whites. I have ruined two loads of white cloths, and now I noticed it on some of my colored towels. I tried Gain HE, which the powder is white, and it did not happen. I am going to wash a few whites in the Tide HE (colored powder) again just to see.

When I was getting rust spots on my whites, particularly the towels, it was because I was using bleach and Oxy Clean at the same time. It caused occasional small holes in a few the towels and cleaned the rust off of my washing machine, which was transferred directly into the laundry. The rust stains are still there four years later on the ones that haven't been thrown out yet.

You aren't supposed to use bleach and Oxy Clean in the same loads.
