This is just my opinion but painting a knotty pine ceiling is like pouring Dom Perignon right down the drain. Any value that the knotty pine has (and it is significant) will be completely destroyed by painting it. If you insist though, just get a brush and have at it. No special prep needed except maybe primer first.
