A way to identify trees could be there bark, but more importantly there leafs. You can take a simple leaf and examine it. And also by examining the features of the tree and the place where it is at, for example: There state, climate, kind of soil, etc. Then you can take the information and look the leaf up in a book or the internet.
This is for people like me, who are not scientific, or have a hard time understanding science.

You can identify the type of leaf it is by looking at the traits it has. For example, maple tree leaves will always be large and thin, with pointy edges.

This is a part of botany and biology. Identifying and classifying things is a part of biological sciences. Trees can be identified by their leaf types because leaves belonging to the same category would have similar leaves with simple differences. Thus if you know a bit of botany then you would be able to classify the trees by their leaf type. For instance the leaves of deciduous trees would have some common characteristics. It is the same with other types of trees as well.

One way of identifying trees by their leaf type is to check if the leaves grow on alternative sides of a twig or on the same side. If they grow on the opposite sides of a twig then there is a fine possibility that the tree is a maple, ash or dogwood. Thus it is a good way of identifying winter trees. You can get several such techniques of identifying trees by their leaf type if you check several books or sites on botany.
