When townhouses were being built in the 18th and 19th centuries, they would normally have stables and coach houses built behind them. The coach houses and stables for the horses were on the ground floor and the upper storeys had basic accommodations for the ostlers (stable hands). As motor transport took over from horses and the pressure for accommodation in cities increased, many of these were converted into small houses.
