If you have held the gas valve down for a minute or two after lighting (thermocouple has to get hot) and still goes out when released-need to replace the thermocouple. It is a safety device - small gas line with a inch or two long metal piece right above the pilot light location. Find at Lowes or other hardware store.
Newer water heaters were designed by comitee , yep congress , its a safety thing . All brands provide the same unintended consequences . #1 problem is lack of combustion air coming in from the bottom of unit……theres a grate on the bottom . You may use a stiff brush, toilet brush works ok .reaching through slots in the base . Work it back & forth & side to side.#2 problem , thermocouple unit has a low temperature melt disc that completes a circuit & tells the controls that the pilot is still lit. If the solder has melted you will have to have this part replaced by a competant service person….good luck.
IF THE PILOT WON'T STAY LIT, IT MAY BE THAT THERE IS TOO MUCH MINERAL BUILD UP ON IT. NATURAL GAS LEAVES A WHITE-ISH MINERAL SIMILAR TO CALCIUM AROUND THE PILOTS AND IGNITORS. IF THAT IS NOT THE CASE, TRY REPLACING THE THERMO COUPLER. (STAT)
Have you checked the thermostat.
Thermostat is the device that tells the heater when to fire and when not to.
It happened with my heater couple of years ago. I brought the technician, and he changed some portion of heater called cell, he told me that thermostat is connected to it. I would suggest you to change this portion, its not too expensive.
If your heater is in warranty, then better to exchange this one. As this is not going to live longer after these kinds of problem.
Hope that answers.
