The folks that are slashing and burning the Amazon rain forest are not replanting. Their goal is cleared land. If they don't stop, the land will be as barren as an English moor.

Building materials will change, climate will change. Ecosystems will be lost before they can be studied by the non-natives.

Logging companies re-plant trees for future use, fires are hard to control when and how they happen. What will happen if we DO stop cutting trees is there will be no affordable materials for building homes, making paper and many many other uses. We will never stop cutting trees because we can't afford not too, however there are ways to manage it and I think we are doing a pretty good job of it.
