When I was a kid, my mom used the myrtle bushes (not a tree) which were way out back on a fence row. There is something in the bush itself which keeps fleas away, but will also repel them from the area in which they are placed. We just broke them limbs off and placed them around the room, then removed them the next day. Somehow it worked.
