Most designers use 36 inches above the table as a general rule of thumb.

It all depends on what is underneath.  If you put a tall flower pot with the flowers, the heat of the light will surely burn them.  I you are to do it, place something smaller.  The height could vary, and it should permit you have a conversation while sitting at the table and being able to see each other and not feel that the lamp bothers your sight with the glare.
