Oleander Shrubs grow on a selection of soils in warm climates. It blooms in summer and produces pungent plants in numerous shades. The plants are very common in the West Coast of America.
They are suited for dry conditions, marshy soil as well as salty land. They grow to between six and 12 feet tall and are poisonous if ingested and can cause skin irritation.
The best way to care for this plant is to apply a layer of compost under the plant in the spring time and spread it out to the area with the most branches, which is known as the drip line. Place about a 2in layer of mulch around the plant to prevent weeds and to retain moisture. If there is less than 1in of rainfall per week during the summer make sure to water the oleander. Also ensure to prune the plant when it’s in bloom to encourage the flowers and it to get bushier as well as to reduce the size of the shrub.
If you are planting an Oleander Shrub there are also some things to remember. The best time to plant the shrub is either in the summer or the autumn time. Ideally place it in an area of light shade, on well-drained soil. Plant the buses 6-12 feet apart and dig a hole about 2-3 times the width of the root ball but only as deep as it.
If the soil is poor add compost and carefully set the plant in the hole surrounded by the compost. Fill the hole with soil and water the Oleander Shrub well to eliminate air pockets. Let the water drain and fill the rest of the hole with soil and water again
