This could be a major project your best bet is to strip the walls down to the studs make shure all of the studs are straight across do this buy putting a straight edge on the surface of the studs making shure it make contact with all of the studs if not you can rip 2x4's to fill the gap once that is done then put up your tile board so you have a sound and solid surface toy work with
