Can Wire Size For A 20 Amp Outlet?

A standard 110 volt 20 amp outlet would only require 12/2 with ground (or 10/2 with grd for long run).
The wire should be sized to the breaker for the circuit, also.

Depending on the distance from the panel, 12/3 would be fine. Over 100' and you would use 10/3
