BEFORE YOU START WORKING WITH THE SWITCH MAKE SURE THE POWER IS OFF!!!!!!
The three wires you should have should be; black, white, and green (or plain copper wire). The black wire is your hot wire. Your white wire is your neutral wire. The green wire or plain copper wire is your ground. You should have 2 screws or connections on the same side of the switch. The black wire should be wired to the top screw or connection, the white wire to the screw below it on the same side and the ground connection is usually on the opposite side of the two connections and that is where the green or plain copper wire goes.
