There are a number of tips and tricks available on the internet to help remove saliva stains from mattresses, from old wives' tale to top of the range cleaning products. Here are a few methods I have come across:

• Use a citrus based cleaning product

Citrus based cleaning products work due to their mild acidity and, often, their natural ingredients. More often than not, household objects and natural ingredients are the most effective cleaning product to use in cases such as this. Spray directly onto the affected area of your mattress and leave for at least five minutes. After at least five minutes have elapsed, use a sponge or a damp cloth to dab at the area firmly. Do not rub the area, as this will cause the stain to become more deeply ingrained. If the dabbing process does not lift the stain the first time (and it may not, if the stain is old or thick), simply repeat the process until the stain is lifted.

• Use a mild dish detergent

The phosphates and enzymes within dish detergents may be able to life out the saliva stains from your mattress. Blot the affected area of the mattress with the dish detergent, leave for a few minutes, and wipe away the detergent using a damp sponge or cloth.

• Use vinegar

Spraying or rinsing affected areas of a mattress with a solution of vinegar and water prior to cleaning may help you to get rid of the saliva stains on your mattress. As with the citrus based cleaning products, the vinegar in the solution may be acidic enough to help lift the stain from the mattress. Clean as usual, or using a dish detergent as outlined above, to help remove saliva stains.

Other than the methods outlined above, my only other recommendation is to buy a thick, good quality mattress protector. This can be washed much more easily than a mattress can, is easier to remove stains from, and will shield your mattress from stains caused by saliva and sweat.
