I have a dimmer switch with two red wires one black and a ground how do I hookup
How To Hook Up Two Lights To One Three Wire Cable (black, Red And White) Using Two Separate Switches?
TURN THE BREAKER OFF.
Run your normal 2-conductor wire (actually with three internal wires -- black, white, ground) from the service panel (or a convenient junction box if you are extending an existing circuit) to the most convenient 3-way switch. (This should be at least 14/2 coming from a 15 amp breaker and at least 12/2 coming from a 20 amp breaker.) Run the 3-conductor wire (actually with four internal wires -- red, black, white, and ground) from the first 3-way switch to the second 3-way switch. Make another run of normal 2-conductor wire (black, white, ground) from the second 3-way switch to the first light and another from the first light to the second light. Now you are ready for the connections.
At the first 3-way switch, attach the black wire from the service panel (or junction box) to the common terminal on the first 3-way switch. Attach the red wire going to the second 3-way switch to a traveler terminal on the first 3-way switch (it does not matter which one), and attach the black wire going to the second 3-way switch to the other traveler terminal on the first 3-way switch. Now connect the two white wires together, and connect all the grounds together.
At the second 3-way switch, attach the red wire coming from the first 3-way switch to a traveler terminal on the second 3-way switch (it does not matter which one), and attach the black wire coming from the first 2-way switch to the other traveler terminal on the second 3-way switch. Attach the black wire going to the first light to the common terminal on the second 3-way switch. Now connect the two white wires together, and connect all the grounds together.
At the first light, connect the black wire coming from the second 3-way switch and the black wire going to the second light to the brass terminal of the first light. Connect the white wire coming from the second switch and the white wire going to the second light to the silver terminal of the first light. Now connect all the grounds together.
At the second light, connect the black wire coming from the first light to the brass terminal of the second light. Connect the white wire coming from the first light to the silver terminal of the second light. Now connect all the grounds together.
Turn the breaker on, and it should work fine.
