It depends on whether the blade spins clockwise or counter-clockwise.
I don't know - that's what I'm trying to figure out. But the other people answering seem not to realize that there are some exceptions to the rule of "counterclockwise to loosen". What I don't know is if a lawnmower blade is one of these exceptions.
There is an old expression, lefty lighty, righty tighty, so always turn to the left to loosen and right to tighten. Actually left is something else, but can't recall, just as long as you remember righty tighty you'll be okay
