It is relatively simple to build a basic standard pipe swing set, and requires very few tools or specialist knowledge. In essence, all you are doing is threading 2” galvanized iron pipe (it’s important that it’s galvanized to prevent rust), into different fittings before securing solidly into the ground. You will also need to drill holes into the metal pipes to fit the swings using eye bolts, metal chains, and a rubber/plastic seat.
Things to note
•The pipe must be at least twice the height of the child (or adult!) using the swing.
•Each swing should be fitted with a 24” seat with a space of one foot on each side, to give it enough room to swing without hitting the pipes.
Frame
•You’ll need a ‘Y’ fitting for the ends of the swing sets to construct the ‘A’ support legs. (These materials will be available from any major hardware or DIY store such as B&Q, Homebase, etc.
•Use a cross pipe to support the swings. Drill a hole through the pipe with appropriate spacing for each swing. Thread the 2” galvanised pipe through each end and secure with Y fittings. Tighten the threadings using a pipe wrench. To prevent water or insects getting into the pipes, fit threaded pipe caps onto the leg ends.
Swings
•Use eye bolts and threaded nuts and washers through the holes across the cross pipe to securely attach the bolts, ensuring the ‘eye’ is on the inside of the swing set. The swing chain should be two lengths of heavy-weigh link chain, and should be attached to the eye bolts with ‘S’ hooks.
Seats
•The seats should be 24” wide and ideally made from rubber or plastic as these surfaces will be more comfortable. Install eye bolts at either end of the seat and attach to the chains with ‘S’ hooks.
Placement
•It is important for each leg to be fitted solidly into the ground. To do this, dig 12” holes for each leg and secure in with soil or concrete.
